The images of flooded villages and people wading through the dark brown water are now shown on news channels throughout the world.
When the water and the news cameras eventually pull away, the full scope of the devastation will become visible: a barren land with no crops to be harvested, disease on the rise, and in a few months the severe cold of winter will hit hard.
But there's hope. Here's how we will let them know that we care about them!
Help rebuild homes for those who are displaced through Karachi Relief Trust's (KRT) Give A Home program. KRT will build 100 climate-resilient, sustainable homes in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) region and 200 in Sindh.
Help provide much-needed medical aid through Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) doctors present in the field. They need not only medication but also clean drinking water to prevent the spread of disease.
Help people access food, healthcare and other basic needs through Omar Asghar Khan Development Foundation (OAKDF), which is rebuilding bridges and pathways, and installing chairlifts.

SAVE PAKISTAN asbl is a Brussels-based charity run by a group of concerned and committed individuals who aim to bring the issues being faced in Pakistan, both now and in the future, to the attention of a wider public.
We are working together with MSF Belgium and two local community based organizations working to provide humanitarian aid and have long-running projects in the affected areas: the Karachi Relief Trust and the Omar Asghar Khan Development Foundation. We chose to work with these trusted organizations on the ground to ensure that help reaches those that are affected directly. We are currently focusing on areas most severely affected. In the long-run we plan to work with various partners on the ground to help rebuild not only infrastructure but society.
So please, share the gratitude. It only takes a minute to help

MSF volunteers currently undertake medical activities in more than 15 locations in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Federally Administered Tribal Areas, Punjab, Balochistan and Sindh provinces. With more than 1,200 national and 100 international staff in Pakistan, MSF is currently scaling up its rapid response to the flood disaster. To curb the possible outbreak of waterborne diseases, MSF is increasing clean water distribution activities.
As part of the Pak Pani Project, KRT is deploying the EPA certified, 99.9% effective (at removing viruses, bacteria and parasites) LifeStraw Family Instant Microbial Purifiers to all flood affected regions. KRT will deploy 50,000 purifiers to provide up to 10 million liters of purified drinking water per day.
At the Munda Head Works (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) and in Punjab, KRT will rebuild housing based on architecture for humanity's designs. The reconstruction will be sustainable, not just environmentally but economically too, resulting in improved housing. The estimated cost of each house is PKR 150,000 + 25,000 (Household Package) = PKR 175,000 (USD 2,058).
The design of Pakistan 2010 Flood Relief is based on first-hand needs assessments, a review of secondary data, and on the Foundation’s knowledge of the area and its links with local people. Besides providing emergency aid, OAKDF is working in collaboration with local communities to restore access. Many areas are isolated as bridges, roads, and even jeep tracks are washed away. People are forced to cover long distances on foot, often over very difficult terrain, to access food.

"The Indus is truly a 'cradle of civilization'. In tracing the river back north from the Kotla Barrage (where the flood peak passed in the last couple of days on its way to threatening rural and urban areas in the south all the way to the sea) on Google Maps, you can find the site of Mohenjo daro, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Settlement there began over three millenia ago, based on the development of stable agriculture fed by the monsoons and the river system which drains an enormous area from the glaciers of the TIbetan plateau through the forests and gorges and down into the flatter lands where agriculture and civilization developed, collecting the waters of five major river systems (the Punjab or "five waters") and flowing to the delta where it is joined with two other major rivers before going to the Arabian Sea. Not surprisingly, the famous names are all closely related -- Indus, Sindh, Hindu, India.
This was the area that really developed full-blown urbanization, with city planning and street grids, advanced domestic water and flood management, weights and measures, decimalization, medicine, metallurgy, art, music, and on and on.
And now, the Wikipedia page on Mohenjo-daro drily notes,"The highest temperature ever recorded in Pakistan, 53.5 °C (128.3 °F), was recorded here on 26 May 2010." Followed not long after by truly catastrophic flooding that is also erasing part of the immense archeological heritage, It isn't just a local tragedy, this is a reminder for a fractious, quarreling global society that we are a common humanity and this history is ours." - Fred Heutte, Portland, Oregon USA.
